Zakat al-Fitr 2026: Amount, Who Must Pay, and When to Give (By Country)

As Ramadan draws to a close, Muslims prepare to fulfill an important obligation distinct from annual zakat: zakat al fitr (also known as sadaqatul fitr or zakat fitrah).

Every year, questions arise:

  • What is the fitrah amount for 2026?
  • Who must pay zakat al fitr?
  • What is the zakat al fitr deadline?
  • Can it be paid in cash?
  • Does it differ by country?

This guide answers all of the above clearly and practically.

What Is Zakat al Fitr?

Zakat al fitr is a mandatory charity due at the end of Ramadan, before the Eid prayer. It is not the same as annual zakat on wealth.

The Prophet ﷺ made it obligatory:

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ obligated zakat al fitr as purification for the fasting person from idle talk and obscenity, and as food for the poor.”
— Sunan Abi Dawud

It serves two purposes:

  1. Purifies shortcomings in our fasting.
  2. Ensures the poor can celebrate Eid with dignity.

Who Must Pay Zakat Fitrah?

A Muslim must pay zakat fitrah if:

  • They are Muslim.
  • They possess surplus food or wealth beyond basic needs on the night before Eid.
  • They have enough to support themselves and their dependents.

The head of household pays for:

  • Themselves
  • Spouse
  • Children
  • Dependents under their care

According to classical jurists (see Al-Mughni), zakat al fitr is due on every eligible Muslim — including children and elders — provided the household has surplus means.

Unlike annual zakat, there is no niṣāb requirement tied to a full lunar year.

How Much Is the Fitrah Amount in 2026?

The required amount is based on one ṣāʿ (a classical unit of volume) of staple food. This equals approximately:

2.5–3 kg (about 5.5–6.5 lbs) of staple food such as:

  • Rice
  • Wheat
  • Barley
  • Dates

The Prophet ﷺ specified one ṣāʿ of food (reported in Sahih al-Bukhari).

Can It Be Paid in Cash?

There is scholarly difference:

  • The majority (Maliki, Shafi‘i, Hanbali) traditionally preferred food.
  • The Hanafi school permitted paying its cash equivalent.

Today, most scholars allow paying the cash equivalent if it better serves the poor.

Australia

Estimated: AUD $12–$15 per person

Zakat al Fitr Deadline: When Must It Be Given?

The zakat al fitr deadline is before the Eid prayer.

The Prophet ﷺ instructed it be given:

“Before the people go out to the prayer.”
— Sahih al-Bukhari

Timing Guidelines:

  • Permissible: During Ramadan
  • Best: 1–2 days before Eid
  • After Eid prayer: It becomes ordinary charity (sadaqah), not zakat al fitr

If missed unintentionally, it must still be paid immediately.

Quick Example

A family of five in the United States:

$12 × 5 people = $60 total zakat al fitr

That amount should be distributed before Eid prayer so families in need can celebrate.

Key Differences: Zakat al Fitr vs Annual Zakat

Zakat al Fitr

Annual Zakat

Due at end of Ramadan

Due after one lunar year

Fixed per person

2.5% of qualifying wealth

No niṣāb tied to ḥawl

Requires niṣāb + 1 year

Purifies fasting

Purifies wealth

Both are obligations — but they serve different spiritual and social purposes.

Final Reminder

Zakat al fitr is small in amount but enormous in impact.

It ensures:

  • No one goes hungry on Eid.
  • Your Ramadan is spiritually completed.
  • The joy of Eid reaches every home.

Make sure to calculate your zakat fitrah early, confirm the local fitrah amount, and give it before the zakat al fitr deadline.

May Allah accept your fasting, your sadaqatul fitr, and your worship.
